Fearing a Particular Person

When fearing a person or when one is terrified of a person, one should recite:

اَللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنَاهُ بِمَا شِئْتَ

Trans: O Allah, grant us safety against him as, and how you please.

The author states that this hadith is authentic and Abu Nu’aim has mentioned it in his book al-Mustakhraj ala Sahih Muslim.

When Faced with Grief, Sorrow and Apprehension

When faced with grief, sorrow, anxiety etc. recite the following:

لاَ اِلَهَ اِلاَّ اللهُ الْعَظِيْمُ الْحَلِيْمُ , لاَ اِلَهَ اِلاَّ اللهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمِ لاَ اِلَهَ اِلاَّ اللهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَ الْاَرْضِ وَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيْمِ

Trans: None is worthy of worship except Allah, The Holy, The Endurant; none is worthy of worship except Allah, The Lord of The Great Throne; none is worthy of worship except Allah, The Lord of the heavens and The Lord of the Throne of Honour.

Or recite:

حَسْبِىَ اللهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيْلُ

Trans: Allah is sufficient for me and what an excellent patron He is.

This can also be recited when one is helpless in a matter.

Frightening Dream or any Form of Disturbance

When one’s sleep is disturbed by an unpleasant dream or for any reason at all, the following ta’awwuz should be recited:

اَعُوْذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ غَضَبِهِ وَعِقَابِهِ وَ شَرِّعِبَادِهِ وَ مِنْ هَمَزَاتِ الشَّيَاطِيْنِ وَاَنْ يَحْضُرُوْنِ

Trans: I invoke the perfect words of Allah for protection against His wrath, anger and punishment and the mischief of His servants and the evil promptings of the Shaytaan and against their coming even near me.

Note: According to reliable sources Abdullah bin Amr bin al-Aas Radiallahu anhu used to teach this ta’awwuz, verbatim, to his elder children. He would also write it and let little children wear it as ta’weez.

Removing Grief and Sorrow

… and the removing of any difficulty pertaining to life recite the following Dua excessively in the morning and evening:

اَلّلهُمَّ اِنِّى اَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَ الْحُزْنِ وَاَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسْلِ وَاَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ

الْجُبْنِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَاَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ غَلَبَةِ الدِّيْنِ وَقَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ

Trans: O Allah! I seek your protection against worry and grief; from timidity and indolence; from cowardice and selfishness; from overwhelming indebtedness; and from the oppression of people.

Note: Wherever asbahto or asbahnaa in the above Duas is mentioned it should be read as asmaito or amsainaa if the same Dua is to be recited in the evening or night. And wherever hazal yawm is mentioned, it should be recited as hazal lailah if the same dua is to be recited in the evening or night. Similarily, wa-ilayhin nushoor should be recited as wa-ilayhil maseer.

Turning to Allah

assalam alaykum,

We should always turn to Allah subhana wa tala for all our needs and concerns. Especially in times of grief, sorrow, and despair, there is none better to turn to than Allah subhana wa tala.

All our complaints, and all of our requests should be brought in front of Him only.
